Senior Pastor
“I can’t believe it’s Christmas already!”
How many times have you heard that over the last week or two?
It seems to me that Christmas brings so many gifts to us that are not material. One of them for Christians is an annual reminder that life is short, and we live it in the light of the King. There is an invitation at Christmas for all who are willing to take it.
Advent which began yesterday (Sunday 30th Nov) is a slow, reflective walk to the place where God came down. A reckoning of sorts with the staggering thought of our Creator reaching out to us by becoming one of us. The astonishing truth is, that whether we believe in him or not, Jesus Christ lowered himself to our level.
No entry on a wild stallion as a conquering king.
No fanfare.
No palace or Social media announcements.
A child born through an ordinary peasant girl in dubious circumstances, in a place of no power or privilege. The baby in a manger still blows our minds if we take a moment to consider it.
As we head into the festivities, the fun, and the feasting, and all the activities required of us at this time of year. Let us not forget the reason for the season.
Can I encourage you to slow for a moment and do something different. Take a moment…
Take a moment to remember our Lord humbling himself (Philippians 2:5-11)
Take a moment to remember the gift that keeps on giving – the opportunity for love, forgiveness, and hope for all. (John 3:16-17)
Take a moment give thanks to God for taking the initiative - coming to us first (Romans 5:8)
This Christmas we can let the good stuff like presents, feasts, family and fun dominate the landscape of our minds. Alternatively we can allow the great news to fill us with thanksgiving.
For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
May this Christmas be so filled with Jesus that His joy and peace completely infuse the rest.
We're excited about celebrating Christmas together this year. We hope you can join us onsite at one or more of our events, but if you can't, don't worry! They'll be livestreamed so you can watch at home.
Check out all the details via the button below, but here's a brief summary:
Sunday December 21: Carols and Festivities at 9am & 11am
Tuesday December 24: Christmas Eve service 5pm
Wednesday December 25: Christmas Day service 9am
One of the most important and special parts of Christmas together is serving one another - and welcoming people who might be joining us for the first time (or the first time in a long time).
To help in achieving this goal, we'd love you to consider signing up to serve at SBC over Christmas.
There are so many different ways you can serve and you can find out about them (and sign up) via the link below.
During November, we invited the SBC community to contribute to the work of Community Care as they serve struggling members of our local area at Christmas.
Many of you gave generously, which will enable Community Care to distribute hampers of yummy Christmas goodies and food-only gift vouchers.
This year the total amount given was:
This incredible display of generosity means the Community Care team will be able to help many people in our local community.
Thanks so much to all who contributed!
On the 14th of December our Tribe Grade 6 Graduation ceremonies will be taking place in the English congregation services at 9am and 11am. This will be a super special day where we get to celebrate these kids' journey into high school and Fuel, they will also be receiving a certificate and small gift. Any parents of Grade 6 kids who need to confirm their child's attendance please contact Gill Carne.
During school holidays, kid's kits will be available for all Christmas services (21st, 24th, 25th) and throughout January.
Tribe resumes on Sunday 1st February.
After Christmas, sometimes people are left wondering about Jesus - who he is and why we celebrate him.
If you or someone you know has questions about Jesus and Christianity, the Alpha course is a great place to seek answers.
We have an 8 week course starting onsite on Tuesday Feb 3 from 7-9pm. The first night is an 'Alpha Party', which is an opportunity for people to come along, enjoy food, drink, conversation and check out what Alpha is like before committing to the whole course.
So if you'd like more information or to register, click below.
We invited the SBC family to participate in our annual church-wide discipleship survey recently, and we have collated the results for you to read.
This survey is a way we can check the spiritual temperature of our church and how we are going in following Jesus.
Thanks to all who participated.
As a church, we’re looking to reduce costs involved in running The Alpha Course so we can continue to offer it to our Alpha guests free of charge - this is a really important part of Alpha! In light of this, we are looking for volunteers from any congregation who might be interested in serving on the Alpha Catering Team in Term 1 and/or Term 2 in 2026.
We usually have about 20-30 people, including hosts/helpers. The catering team for each night would be required to prepare a main meal and simple dessert/sweet item (all ingredients costs will be covered), with the main meal ready to be served at 7pm sharp (in the Church Café area), and dessert plated up on a trolley by 8.15pm (in Meeting Rooms 4&5). Cleaning up the Café Kitchen is also part of the deal!
Alpha in Term 1 will be run over 8 Tuesday nights, on the following dates: Feb 3, 10, 17, 24, March 3, 10, 17, 24 (Term 2 dates to be advised).
Volunteers are welcome to be involved in serving as much or as little as they would like, choosing to take on one or more nights in the term. It could also be a great opportunity for life groups to serve together in this really significant ministry in our church! And, of course, volunteers would be welcome to prepare and eat dinner together as a team on the night also! There is also the opportunity for someone to take on the role of coordinating this new ministry area. This person would not be required to be there every week, but to be responsible for scheduling the various volunteer teams, ensuring there is a varied menu plan in place over the term (so we don’t get 5 weeks of lasagna!!), suggesting menu ideas to volunteers if required, and providing instructions for using the Café Kitchen.
For more information, or to express your interest in serving in this way, please contact Mandy Stark at mstark@sb.org.au or Ruth Bawden at rbawden@sb.org.au. Thank you!
Starting next year, Pastor Maranda Ng will be adjusting her work schedule from five days to three days per week. In light of this change, and after prayerful consideration, the Church Council is opening a two-day Cantonese pastoral position for public application. This is not only a step to support our current ministry needs, but also a hopeful move toward building the future of our Cantonese congregation. We trust that God will provide the right person to join our team in serving with love and walking together in faith. We invite everyone to pray with us for this process, asking the Lord to lead and bring the right co-worker to join our ministry, so that our church may continue to grow in unity and hope through this transition.
Position Description and application details can be found by clicking the link below.
Youth Dimension would love to thank the Syndal Baptist Church community for welcoming us so warmly to share your space. It has been an answer to prayer for us to be able to find a place so generous and open-hearted as we continue to pursue our ministry spaces to give every generation hope. Ruth, Clara, and Pete have particularly blessed us as they’ve gone above and beyond to ensure everything runs smoothly, and we’ve always felt welcome. We have also enjoyed the smiles and greetings of the Playgroup, English & Bible study classes, as well as those enjoying their morning tea in the café area. Again, thank you all so much for your generosity. Please pray for us as we continue to follow the Lord’s leading for our future.
Herman Westendorp (76) has been fit and active so his recent diagnosis of a brain tumour came as quite a shock. He has had surgery and is now home, but there will be many challenges ahead. Herman is married to Betty & dad to Judith Jansen. He will commence chemo and radiation in the new year. Herman's prayer quilt will be in the lobby this Sunday. Please pray for him and his family, and, if at church, tie a knot on his quilt as a sign of your prayerful support.
Living out our SBC core value of Mission, the Syndal Young Adults are working and serving to share the Gospel of Jesus this summer.
With organizations like Red Frogs, Blue Moose, and Beach Mission, a number young adults have been, or are, giving up time over their summer holiday to invest in the Kingdom of God.
We invite you to pray for those who are serving on mission this Summer, that God may use them powerfully to share Jesus.
Blue Moose Commissioning Service at Syndal
On Sunday 14th December at 7pm, Youth Dimension will hold their commissioning service for the Blue Moose teams. This service will replace our 5pm service, but all are welcome to come along!
The Church Office will be closed from Monday, 29 December to Friday, 2 January, and will reopen on Monday, 5 January. For any urgent matters, please email admin@sb.org.au
A conversation with God might seem like a strange thought. Not just talking TO him, but having him talk back to you. Yet the Bible is packed with moments where God spoke directly with his people. What did he say? What did they say to him? What can we learn from these conversations? Join us in January as we explore four fascinating and important conversations with God from the Old Testament.
35 men from SBC headed to Jerusalem Creek camping ground (near Elidon) and enjoyed a great weekend away water-skiing, boat trips, golfing, 4WD, eating good food and sitting around the night campfire laughing and chatting about all sorts of topics.
The guest speaker, Simon Pounder, engaged in great ways throughout the weekend as he encouraged and challenged with what REAL men should aim to live out in their lives: Rejecting being passive, Engage with God, Accept responsibility and Lead with courage. He did this as he compared the lives of two old testament characters, Adam and King David. One of the joys of the weekend is the making and building of friendships that is not always possible on a Sunday. Numbers of guys find others who have similar interests as them that then leads to meeting up beyond the camp. Others are invited into life groups, social events and even accountability groups to further their christian faith together.
Next year's Man Alive camp dates are November 6th-8th, men lock it into your diaries now!
One of the weekly ministries that has been running here at SBC for many years is Conversational English, where an opportunity is offered to those who want to learn the basics of the english language in the welcoming community of SBC volunteers. Throughout 2025 there have been numbers of people on Tuesday's and Thursday's who have participated.
In exciting news, recently, one of the participants accepted and put their faith in Jesus as their Saviour and friend.
If you would like to explore the possibility of being involved in the Conversational English in 2026 you can call the church office on 9803 9144 to find out how to be involved in this rewarding ministry.
We recently held our 60+ end of year lunch in the Salt Cafe. The lunch went so well! There were over 75 people in attendance, and they all enjoyed a great meal. We were deeply appreciative of the numbers of SBC people who volunteered, and were encouraged by the number of 60+ members who brought along friends.
Benefits of indoor plants by Sustainable Gardening Australia In modern buildings with windows that are sealed (“tight buildings”) levels of carbon dioxide are higher than outdoors, coming from air we breathe out, and can cause restlessness and sleepiness. Carbon monoxide can also be a little higher, generated by heating, smoking, incense and candles. Since plants are responsible for removing these gases from the air, having them indoors not only helps save the planet, but helps make us less lethargic and generally feeling better!
Week ending: 1/12/2025
Weekly target: $55,000
This week actual: $78,253 (142% of budget)
Year to date actual: $2,237,808 (96% of budget)
WHAT HAS BEEN HAPPENING RECENTLY IN THE CANTONESE CONGREGATION?We praise God for his goodness and faithfulness this year:
• Thriving Life Groups – 80–90% weekly attendance and 24 new members finding community and belonging.
• Strategic Integration – The Spark Fellowship will join our Central ministry.
• Spiritual Milestones – 14 baptisms and a deep hunger for God’s Word reflected from our three-phase Sunday seminars. All glory to God! Let’s finish the year rejoicing in what he has done.
HOW CAN WE BE PRAYING FOR YOUR CONGREGATION?
Please Pray for Our Team:
• Vision – To see this mission through Jesus’ eyes and grow closer to Him.
• Unity – For strong bonds and seamless cooperation, especially with teams from a different culture.
• Boldness – For courage and clarity in sharing the gospel. Let’s uphold them in prayer as they go.
We look forward with expectation to all God will do in 2026!
Series: What If?
Sermon: What if the power that raised Jesus lives in you?
Preacher: Chris Danes
While we say we believe in an extraordinary God, if we’re honest, many of us stopped believing he still does extraordinary things a while ago. Or at least, we stopped believing he can do extraordinary things through us.
But what if we’re wrong? This week, Chris Danes will explore the explosive claim of Paul that the same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead lives in us. What if we lived like we believed it?
Series: What If?
Sermon: What if we loved our neighbours as ourselves?
Preacher: Tom Postlethwaite
If we’re talking about living out key things we say we believe, then loving our neighbour as ourselves has got to be right up there as one of the most important. Yet, it’s also one of the things we struggle with most. Whether our struggle is to love people we don’t know or people we find unlovable, or that we struggle to love people with the sort of priority we show ourselves, this command is a tricky one. Join us as Micah Evans challenges us to imagine what might change in a world where Jesus’ followers truly put this teaching into practice.
5pm Service change: Our 5pm service today will be replaced by a 7pm Blue Moose Commissioning service. This service will be run by Youth Dimension as they commission teams heading out on summer mission to various locations around Australia. All are welcome to attend!
Series: Christmas
Sermon: What if?
Preacher: Mike Riddell
At our 2025 Carols services we will sing classic Christmas songs, hear scripture readings, pray, and hear a message from Mike Riddell posing the question, 'What if the baby that changed the world could also change you?'.
Join us for our Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services as we celebrate the birth of Jesus and the what that pivotal moment in history reveals about God's heart.
These services are essentially identical so our Christmas Eve service will be streamed live from 5pm and available to view all day Christmas Day.
Sermon: The gift that keeps on giving
Preacher: Tim Dyer
In this online only service we will spend time worshipping and praying to end our 2025, and our Pastor for the 60+ congregation, Tim Dyer, will share a message with us to help us think about how the events of Christmas can shape the year ahead.
Watch the service via sb.org.au/watch or via our YouTube channel.
There are no onsite services today, but will resume at 9am and 11am next Sunday (Jan 4).
Series: Conversations with God
Sermon: Moses
Preacher: Bill Brown
When Moses fled from Egypt after committing a crime, he may have assumed that would be the end of the story. But God had other ideas. This week, Bill Brown will help us take a look at a conversation between Moses and God that would change the course of his life, and the lives of countless others.
No 5pm English service today. Resumes next Sunday (11th Jan).
